This week a powerful earthquake struck the northeastern Afghanistan, including Pakistan, India and Tajikistan. The earthquake killed dozens of people, collapsed structures, and created panic. In Afghanistan, more than 180 were killed with hundreds of others injured. The overall total number of deaths for Pakistan, Afghanistan and India were 306.
This Earthquake was similar to a magnitude- 7.6 quake in Kashmir that killed more than 70,000 in 2005. However, this Monday’s magnitude- 7.5 earthquake happened deep inside the Earth, some 223 kilometers or 139 miles below the surface. According to the U.S Geological Survey, Earthquakes at this depth typically cause less damage on the surface than shallower quakes.
In one norther Afghan Town, there were 12 school girls died trying to evacuate their school during the earthquake. These girls were only between 10 and 15 years old.
“In 30 years of my life, it was the worst I experienced myself” said Masoud Popalzai, CNN producer in Kabul.
This disaster was very tragic, especially for those who lost their family. The government should learned from this tragic event. They should build more stronger and more stable buildings that won’t easily break when this kind of disaster occurred. Another thing that the government should do is teach people how to be safe and how they can protect themselves during an earthquake. Early report say that the number of deaths are less because of these awareness than the one from 10 years ago.
