I was born in Peru, lived there for 12 years and had a lot of fun there with my family. I have three older brothers, and we were raised there in Lima, Callao; not a really good place to live in though, but Peru has a lot of good places to go visit. Peru is a beautiful place where the Incas created a lot of places as their homes and temples. Out of struggle and sacrifice, they created Machu Picchu as a beautiful city in the Andes mountains.
Most archeologists believe that Machu Picchu was built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti. referred to as the “Lost City of the Incas”. The Incas built the estate around 1450 but abandoned it a century later at the time of the Spanish Conquest. It was not known to the Spanish during the colonial period and remained unknown to the outside world until American historian Hiram Bingham brought it to international attention in 1911.
Machu Picchu( Cusco) was the place where my dad took me when I was younger, when he was traveling for his soccer games. This place has a lot of memories for my family and the history of Peru, before the Spanish conquered the Incas. As the mural down below shows, Peru has a lot of mixed cultures, and they were all competing against each other.
The Incas sport called “Tlachtli” connects with the sport I play today and the competition that is part of human society. People fight over power and the weaker ones would loose everything or even die just like the Incas sport, losers were sacrificed while winners would inherit their belongings such as clothes and money, with the family also brought into the “wager.” Inca History will always play a role in my life because it still connects all the things they did back then with the things that are still happening now, and the sport is definitely one of them.
I moved here to the USA with my family, because the economy was bad in Peru. In Peru there were not many jobs and it has a lot of violence. When I got here to the U.S, I had a couple of free months before I had to start school. So my parents took me to go visit some places like Washington DC where I got to see the White House. After that they took me to Orlando Universal Studios.
When we got back from the trip I had to start school. I started in middle school in the 7 grade. It was hard for me because I did not know any English. Because of this, I didn’t really enjoy being at school. After several months I got use to it and I started to understand more English. When I was done with middle school, I was ready for high school, but I had learn more English. I mostly liked high school because they have a soccer team. My freshman year I got more involved with their activities, that is when I started to play for their soccer team. I got to play for JV a couple games, then I got moved up to Varsity. This is when I started to care less about school. I was playing for the high school soccer team. Also I had a soccer travel team where most of the time we have to travel to the games, so I barely had any time to do any school assignments.
I decided to look for an alternative in my school career. So I decided to move here to Mountain View. I came here with a fixed mind set, I thought it was going to be the same as my other school but that it would be less time for each class. At the big base school I didn’t really get help, because the classrooms were full of students and the teachers had barely time to help every student. I was right about my choice to come here. Here in Mountain view all my teachers changed my mind set to a growth mindset. They were always talking to me, saying that by finishing school it will help me in my future, and now I am close to graduating and really looking forward to my future after high school.
