Rosie the Riveter by J. Howard Miller in 1943
Propaganda is a kind of communication aimed to certain groups of people and to influence or to get them joining or believe what you believed in, whether it’s political or religious. This is an example of a propaganda during the World War II that trying to encourage women to join the work force.
After Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7,1941, American declared with Japan and joined the World War II. Since the war needed greater amounts of war materials and most of the men were away fighting at the war oversea, women at home were called up to work in ways used to only for men. There many other jobs that women worked during the wartime instead of working at the factory, such as Volunteer Emergency Service, Airforce Service, and many became nurses and so on. Women were supporting the war in many way.
Many men had returned to the war and seek for jobs when the work ended. The government had replaced women workers with men. However, majority of women were trying to keep their jobs and the society independence. I think it definitely not fair because women proved that they could do “men’s” work, and do it well during the war. In addition, they changed the tradition roles of the women for just being daughters, mothers, or wives at home.
Do you think women’s World War II work experiences help lead to the Women’s Rights movement?
