This year was the C-SPAN StudentCam’s 20th anniversary of the competition. The topic of the video was “Looking Forward while Considering the Past” and there are 2 prompts under this topic:
- In the next 20 years, what is the most important change that you would like to see in America? Detail a specific issue that is important to you and the evolution of related policies, laws, and actions that you want to see in the future.
- Over the past 20 years, what has been the most important change in America?
Examine a specific law, event, or invention, explain its impact and why you consider it important.
I participated in the Ms. Prescod assigned all her students this video project called the StudentCam C-SPAN Video. She told us that if we submitted at a certain time, we could win a money prize if we were chosen and hearing about the money prize made me eager to work hard and finish my video. I chose topic #1 – In the next 20 years, what is the most important change that you would like to see in America? And chose to create a video based on ocean pollution. I remember not knowing what to base my video on because there were so many options such as fashion, inflation, and housing, but I decided to relate it to an occurring problem I am already focusing on. In my journalism class, we discussed the 17 SDG’s and I chose SDG 14 which is called Life Below Water. It focuses on trying to conserve the ocean and bring it back to it’s beneficial ways.
The process of this assignment was challenging due to all the transitions and side effects but was also exciting. I got to learn more about the problems in my own community related to the pollution and waste in our waters, I also learned a lot more about WeVideo and the different features it provides. Ms. Prescod’s encouragement kept me going as I finalized my video. I was able to create a fun and educational video to help people become more aware of our environment and what’s happening in our water sources.
