Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11. During this day those who have served in the United States Armed Forces are honored.
When the date falls on a Saturday, the work holiday is celebrated on Friday, and if it falls on a Sunday, it is moved to the following Monday. On November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of the First World War was celebrated. President Woodrow Wilson declared that day Armistice Day. November 11, 1938 became a legal holiday, still called Armistice Day. Originally, Armistice Day commemorated those who had served in the First World War. In the early 1940s this changed and since then all veterans of the United States Armed Forces have been remembered. In 1954, “Armistice Day” became, legally, Veterans Day. Throughout the country this day is celebrated with tributes, parades and ceremonies. Sometimes the best way to honor Veterans Day is to talk to a Veteran and appreciate the sacrifices they have made to protect our freedoms.
On June 1, 1954, Veterans day became a day to show our respect towards all veterans. It allows us, as families, friends, and acquaintances to show our honor towards these veterans. They have sacrificed their time, effort and often their health to help our country. It is a day that gives our thanks towards these heroes. This year, Veterans day will be recognized on Friday November 10th. As a school, the Mountain View family honors Veterans who work at our school and the family members of our school community who are Veterans.

After watching the video created by our school community we all should be able to say more. Here are a few ways we can explore what we know about Veterans as we honor them this Veteran’s Day.
We would like to say to Veterans today…
Thank you for what you do. We honor and appreciate your service and bravery.
Veterans are our family, friends and neighbors. A Veteran I know is…
My grandfather in Vietnam (Kim), my Tio (Melony)
My father and my brother were in the military in Taiwan. – Mrs. Ko
My Grandfather served in the military in Afghanistan. – Hameed
My cousin, He served in the Marine Corp for over 5 years. He is now an UltraSound Technician. – Gio
We learned some interesting things about Veterans. For example…
We learned that the military creates respect through shared discipline. We learned that Mt. View has many families with military Veterans. – Mr. Hardy & Mrs. Ko’s Students
We learned that being in the military teaches you discipline, opportunity to learn new things! Also has great benefits like help buying a house! – Mrs. Akula’s Class.
We learned about our own staff members like Mrs. Lauretta Garrett and Mr. Rob Everett who benefitted from their time in the USMC and the US Navy right after they graduated from High School.
We learned that Veterans are good citizens and service creates opportunities.
Veterans Day is important because…
Madina says: Veterans Day is important because we support the military. The Government wants us to know about the military so we can support them. Thank you for your service.
Estefania says: On November 11, 1919, the end of the First World War was celebrated.
Carmen says: They fought for our freedoms and risked their lives.
Veronica says: I want to remind the Military that the work they do in the country is important.
Payman says the military is important because they are the reason we sleep well in our own homes.
Today the possibilities of military service include the following; U.S. ARMY, U.S. MARINE CORPS, U.S. NAVY, U.S. AIR FORCE, U.S. SPACE FORCE, U.S. COAST GUARD and the National Guard of each State. Our school has many families who serve the Federal Government and are US Military Veterans. The National Government gives our school district funds based on this. https://www.fcps.edu/impact
