Thanksgiving Day
Thanksgiving is a special holiday celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday of November. It began as a harvest festival to give thanks for a good harvest and blessings of the past year. Families and friends gather to share a big meal that usually includes turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. It is a time to be thankful and spend time with loved ones.
The first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621 by the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people in Plymouth. They came together to share food and give thanks for the harvest after a difficult year. Over time, Thanksgiving became a national holiday in the United States. President Abraham Lincoln made it official in 1863 to bring the nation together during the Civil War.
Today, people celebrate Thanksgiving in many ways. Some watch parades and football games, while others volunteer to help people in need. Many families also take turns sharing what they are thankful for before eating dinner. The holiday reminds everyone to be grateful for what they have and to show kindness.
