As a yearly tradition the rose parade in Pasadena, Los Angeles is always a fun family event to watch. Unfortunately the entry of 2020 was not a successful year for the participation of the El Salvador band. The band also known as “bigger than our people El Salvador.”, the director didn’t allow a member named Andy Lovos to participate because he didn’t have time to complete a last minute medical form and after paying the initial $2,000 he didn’t have resources to pay a $500 fee for the trip.
Andy Lovos was poor but he was a committed and talented member of the band. It seems his poverty led to discrimination. The problem was that Andy wasn’t able to give the additional $500 to the director on time.
Lucky for Andy, his mentor did a live Facebook video showing the injustice. He was sponsored by a nice man in New York who heard about his case and donated money. Once Andy got to the parade he got kicked out by the director saying he wasn’t allowed to participate because he couldn’t pay the fine on time.
Things escalated quickly and the sheriff had to get involved. Based on the parade safety guidelines, it states “Enhanced security measures will be in effect on the parade route. Pasadena police officers will resolve problems quickly and remove from the scene anyone violating the law or disturbing the peace. Also, police canine teams will be patrolling Colorado Boulevard.” The director then got interviewed by a local news station “telemundo” he stated that he did not kick Andy out but it was the organizers. The reporter then went off on him saying it was him who gave the order to the Sheriff. Andy gained supporters that started the hashtag #teamandy #todoporandy.
This story took a dramatic turn when the President of El Salvador heard about it. He was not pleased that the director of this band representing his nation in America seemed to be more concerned with fees and income rather than supporting the dreams of his young band members. This shows the power of advocacy and diplomacy that young people around the world now have due to global social media access.
“On the case of the band “El Salvador, great as its people”: The organizers of the Band “El Salvador, great as its people” will not receive a single cent from the Government and I am sure that neither from the decent private company. The sustainability of the band will become impossible and the artistic future of hundreds of talented young people is at risk. Therefore, the Government of El Salvador, through the Ministry of Culture, will create the “El Salvador Band”; With enough budget and sponsors, to work even better. We invite all young people who currently make up the band directed by Enot Rubio, to enroll in the new band. El Salvador is a big country, for its people. We will not allow anyone to stain that.”- Nayib Bukele (El Salvador President.)
I think the United States could create a program or foundation for types of students with talent and poverty levels. Maybe the United Nations should join in . There are many students and kids with special talents that should be shared out in the world. For example look at the Voice kids or America’s Got Talent. Lots of people all around the world have come to these shows maybe for different reasons to win money, or show their talent. If these people had more support we would be seeing a world range of people having fun and sharing smiles with one another. This is real and effective diplomacy that can be used to solve problems and reduce inequalities caused by discrimination.
Andy Lovos , has gained many supporters after this incident. So far, we don’t know if the Band from El Salvador will participate in the 2021 Rose parade. Hopefully this accident will make people learn and open their eyes. What is your opinion?
