An American man named Keith Broomfield was killed fighting against ISIS alongside Kurdish forces. He believed it was “God`s will” for him to travel to Syria to fight. A state department official confirmed that Broomfield was killed in Syria at age 36. A woman who said she was Keith`s sister showed NBC text conversations of his reasons for going overseas. He says that “sometimes you have to do what you have to do and be a man about it.”
Numerous Americans are believed to have traveled overseas to help fight along with the Kurdish People’s Protection Union, also known by the initials YPG, in their fight against ISIS. Broomfield is believed to be the first U.S. citizen to die fighting alongside them.
News of Broomfield’s death came as U.S. President Barack Obama sent out 450 troops to help and advise Iraqi forces battling ISIS and attempting to push the Sunni militants out of the city of Ramadi. In recent weeks, ISIS also has seized the Syrian city of Palmyra.
I believe this has to do with the values of life and liberty because this shows a man losing his life because of his freedom to go fight for his ideals. It also has to do with loyalty to people who share his ideals. He is sacrificing for a people and a country that are not his own. In doing this he is standing up as a representative of our country against ISIS terror.
