The Spanish American War erupted in 1898 between the United States and Spain. It was preceded by three years of fighting by Cuban revolutionaries to gain independence from Spanish colonial rule. The USS Maine had come to Cuba to protect American citizens while Cuban revolutionaries were fighting to win independence from Spain. The United States supported the cause of Independence because of the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine.
The American headlines captured a story of the USS Maine exploding in Havana harbor. This may have been an accident but after the Maine exploded, Americans demanded that Spain give Cuba freedom. Instead, Spain declared war, and America quickly followed. President McKinley ordered Commodore George Dewey into position in the Spanish Philippines in the Pacific and Commodore Winfield Scott Schley moved navy ships into Santiago Bay, Cuba.
Below is a picture of the USS IOWA which was the most modern US warship of the Spanish American War.
What did the US gain in this war? Was it easy or hard to win? Why? How does this show American Imperialism? What is America’s political position in the world after this war?
The US called this a “splendid little war.” They gained territory and a powerful image in the war, the territory they gained was Cuban Military Base- Guantanamo Bay, Puerto Rico, Philippines, Guam. My opinion is this war was for a good cause because Cuba wanted to gain their independence. It was easy too win because America had more people willing to fight, they had an industrial modern military.
How does the Map below show IMPERIALISM over time? Explain.
It shows 100 years of expansion because it’s a political competition between the Europeans and , Natives. Manifest Destiny was a type of imperialism over the Natives, African slaves French, the Mexicans, and the Spanish.
