In Mountain View, we tried a video chat with teenagers at a public high school in England called Plymstock. We discussed a wide variety of subjects such as our hobbies, social inequalities, school subjects and personal life. Today I learned that race does not matter, mainly because the Plymstock school was not multi cultural like Mountain View but that did not affect the way we communicated nor did it stop the students from relating to one another. The students from both schools all seemed to be very interested and engaged in the conversation. Speaking for myself I came to school today with my own preconceived notion of the video chat being boring and pointless, but that was not at all the case. The conversations we had were very relatable and interesting.
I think it was very great to be able to hear someone else’s thoughts from the other side of the world and learn the norms of their culture and society. The most important thing that we discussed today in my opinion was the subject of social injustice. I think it was very important that students from both schools agreed upon the fact that race, color, gender and religion do not define a person and should not be used to define a person. I think as people we all have to be more accepting and less judgmental of others. If we all did this we would end needless worry and conflict. I enjoyed the video chat with the wonderful students from Plymstock and we are looking forward to another video chat. I would also like to add a few questions I have for our future chats.
- Is racism a problem in your community ? Do large cities like London have issues with racism?
- If given the chance would you live in America or stay in England ?
