I am wondering why people stereotype latinos, saying we are stealing from the government and taking advantage of it when there are people who come to this country the right way. It’s clear that it’s not easy to come to this country for some. People who immigrate risk their lives to make their future better. Most people who are born here don’t understand that, and don’t appreciate what their parents went through. The majority of young Hispanics don’t see what our parents did and risk to come to this country. Its true that some young immigrants go down the wrong path, but I believe it’s not fair that other people bash on us for what these certain people do.
I will make sure to teach my kids to appreciate what their grandparents went through to make our lives better. My family could only work at jobs that didn’t require you to have papers. So my dad’s first job here in the US at 18 was at a cookie factory. He lived in DC with his aunt, who helped him prosper. Yet being with his aunt, he explained that he also had emotional problems. He said that every night he would cry himself to sleep because he felt so lonely. He left his whole family behind in El Salvador.
He was the oldest of five siblings, two younger brothers, and two younger sisters. After working at the cookie factory he got into a construction company and received a social security number and a work permit. Over the years, he built his way up to his own remodeling company. My mom, on the other hand, didn’t prosper as much because she had to take care of my older brother. But she did receive a social security card and a work permit as well. They are allowed here to work to get their residence here then receive citizenship.
