Six days after making a joyful fan video to Pherell Williams’ song, “Happy”, six young men and women were arrested for it in Iran. Iranian Officials describe it as “obscene” and “vulgar”. The six young men and women were dancing together wearing bright colorful clothing and the women did not cover their head with a hijab. Under Iranian laws, both are forbidden and illegal. Tehran Police Chief Hossein Sajedinia took huge pride in boasting about locking up the six happy dancers and parading their face on television before they went into custody. He warned youths of Iran this could be them if they decide to go against the laws and beliefs of Iran. Pherell was completely shocked when hearing the news and tweeted, ” it is beyond sad these kids were arrested for trying to spread happiness.” Days after the arrest, the six young men and women were released. A year before on June 29, 2013, the Iran president tweeted, “Happiness is our people’s right. We shouldn’t be too hard on behaviors caused by joy.” The irony…
The laws of foreign lands differ and Islam does not believe this was correct behavior. The laws in Iran prohibit the acts of women and men dancing together and women without hijab. So though it seems irrational, it was in fact legal.
