As a Kurdish girl from Iraq, even with the history between Iran and Iraq, I feel that Kurds and Iranians are very similar.  My dad doesn’t tell us Iran is our enemy because he doesn’t want to create hatred or judgement of each other.

In 2010 we went to Iran. which was my first time leaving the north of Iraq.  All the people who went with us were so nice, sweet, lovely, and kind.  We went to Khar Ali Sadr in Hamadan, Iran.  Khar Ali Sadr is a cavern system.  We were interested because that was the first time we saw water in a cavern.  When we came to the U.S.A. we went to another cavern in the U.S.A., and it was just like the one we saw in Iran.  It isn’t just people who are similar everywhere, but also the rocks of the Earth.

What is a cavern?  It is a place under the ground formed by water causing weathering and erosion in the layers of rock in the Earth.  In Khar Ali Sadr there were many interesting things to see in the cavern.  In the middle of the cavern was a structure that looked like a woman with children.  My teacher said this was made by water evaporating and leaving sediment.

This is the “Lady in the Cave.”

The water in the caverns was very deep.  The water was so deep they used boats to show us the caverns.  The cavern was also very cold compared to the surface.  There is no sunlight in the cavern, so the only heat can come from lights that people put there or from heat coming up from inside the Earth.

These are the boats we used to tour the Khar Ali Sadr cavern.

If you think this sounds interesting, then you should travel there to see the caverns (and also have some good food!).  If you can’t travel, you can see the caverns in this video:

Or, if you still want to see a cavern but travel too far, you can go to Luray Caverns in Luray, Virginia.
