What is the Children’s Health Insurance Program?

If your children need health coverage, they may be eligible for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). If they qualify, you won’t have to buy an insurance plan to cover them.

CHIP provides low-cost health coverage to children in families that earn too much money to qualify for Medicaid. In some states, CHIP covers pregnant women. Each state offers CHIP coverage, and works closely with its state Medicaid program.

The healthcare debate is divided by party politics.  CHIP is being changed by Republicans in a way that Democrats say is threatening the overall funding of Obamacare for all.   Almost 9 million kids are at risk of losing their health care because of this change in funding. This year the House and Senate missed a deadline to reauthorize the current levels of funding. The congress is still debating  the new version which is leading to millions of children’s health care being at risk.

Kim Robinson, a program manager with the Southern Regional Office of the Children’s Defense Fund, said if CHIP is not renewed, states could begin running short of funds by the beginning of 2018.   –  Public News Service

Government should protect the children of this country. How can the United States spend millions of dollars on weapons and militia, but not for the children’s health care? If the program CHIP ends, imagine how hard it would be for low-income families. So the government is just going to ignore the health of children and leave them at risk of death or health problems because they can’t agree or compromise with each other?

The CHIP program was created in 1997 by two senators, Utah Republican Orrin Hatch and Massachusetts Democrat Edward Kennedy with support from both sides of the aisle.   – Public News Service

The best bet for proper funding of education and healthcare for our children in Virginia is a vote for the Demoracts.  The democratic candidate for governor, Ralph Northam is planning to improve the healthcare policies, the early childhood education and childcare and he would support existing programs under the current democratic government in Virginia.  The state and local government is more important and more influential than the national government when it comes to serving the basic needs of education and healthcare.

Ralph knows good childcare and early education are vital to kids’ success. Children experience their most significant brain development during their early childhood years, with the most learning potential before age five. That’s why Ralph wants to make early childhood education for every Virginia public school student his top educational priority—and he’s already started. As Chair of the Commonwealth Council on Childhood Success, he led an effort to open up and improve classrooms for up to 13,000 more kids.
